What is the role of art in the world?

Art is a distillation of experience (thought, sensation, feeling) and a creative act that is related to the divine creative act. As such its possibilities are infinite. Its role in the world, it seems to me, is manifold. It can provide a kind of comfort, as in the Matisse quotation about the purpose of art being the same as a comfortable armchair--solace for the soul. On the other hand, art can also be effectively used to play with boundaries and stale categories, as in feminist or queer art--stretching the soul.  It can also be an effective tool for engaging social issues like war, the environment, or poverty--providing a call to arms for the soul. Then there is the important function of creating a living, material memory, as in the Vietnam Memorial or AIDS quilt--commemorating the soul. Historically, in terms of all existing art, it provides us with a kind of visual record of the world soul in different places and periods. These are just a few of the ways art can work to touch us at the deepest core of our being.

Wonderful touchstones on the roles of art. I love the idea of art as a “visual record of the world soul in different places and periods.” So, so true. A kind of alternate (and certainly subject to erosion) Akashic Records on the physical plane…

Thanks for sharing a more defined view of art and illustration.  I would love to cross post this in Dreams of Artist pod as I know there are several that can expand from reading this as well.namaste

Art also allows us to experience our selves in an artistic nature. And also allows us to express those things that we see and feel within to the rest of the world. When we explore art, in which ever way we choose, we have fulfilled or purpose for coming into these bodies; to experience that which we already know about ourselves, therefore turning that knowledge into wisdom/.

Wisdom is having gained knowledge, understanding, experience, discretion, and intuitive understanding, along with a capacity to apply these qualities well. It is the judicious application of knowledge. To some extent the terms wisdom and intelligence have similar and overlapping meanings. The status of wisdom or prudence as a virtue is recognized in cultural, philosophical and religious sources. Wikipedia.com
